Is ChatGPT still on WhatsApp? What happened, and what to use now

ChatGPT on WhatsApp (1-800-ChatGPT) stopped working on January 15, 2026. Why it ended, where your old chats went, and how to tell a real service from an unofficial bot.

No. ChatGPT is no longer on WhatsApp. OpenAI ended its WhatsApp chatbot, the 1-800-ChatGPT contact, on January 15, 2026, after WhatsApp changed the terms of its business platform. If you message that number now, ChatGPT does not answer.

The short timeline

  • December 2024: OpenAI launched 1-800-ChatGPT. In the US you could call it, and in most countries you could message +1 800 242 8478 and chat with ChatGPT, with no app and no account.
  • October 2025: WhatsApp added a section on AI providers to its business terms. A company whose main product is a general-purpose AI assistant can no longer offer it on WhatsApp’s business platform.
  • January 15, 2026: The new terms applied to every business. OpenAI ended ChatGPT on WhatsApp, and Microsoft Copilot left WhatsApp on the same date.

Why it ended

WhatsApp’s business platform was built for companies to talk to their own customers: order updates, bookings, support. WhatsApp said general-purpose chatbots put a heavy load on its systems and needed a kind of support the platform was not built for, and that it wanted the platform kept for business messaging.

Meta described the rule as aimed at AI companies offering their assistant as the product. It said the rule does not cover a business that uses AI to serve its own customers on WhatsApp, such as a shop answering questions about orders or a clinic taking bookings.

Where your old ChatGPT WhatsApp chats went

Before the cutoff, OpenAI let you link the WhatsApp contact to a ChatGPT account. If you did, those conversations are in your ChatGPT history in the app and on chatgpt.com. If you did not, they were not moved, and anything you still have is only what stays in WhatsApp on your phone.

What to use instead

It depends on what you used ChatGPT on WhatsApp for.

  • Everyday questions and writing: the ChatGPT app on iPhone, Android, Mac or Windows, or chatgpt.com in any browser. It is the same ChatGPT, with more features than the WhatsApp version had.
  • A quick answer without leaving WhatsApp: Meta AI, which is built into WhatsApp. It is Meta’s own assistant, not ChatGPT.

How to tell an unofficial “ChatGPT WhatsApp bot”

Search for “chatgpt whatsapp bot” or “gpt chat whatsapp” and you will find numbers that say they are ChatGPT. None of them are from OpenAI, because OpenAI no longer runs a WhatsApp number, and a general-purpose chatbot is not allowed on WhatsApp’s business platform any more. Some may be legitimate services; many are not. Before you use one:

  • Find out who runs it. A real company names itself and has a website with terms and a privacy policy.
  • Never send passwords, card numbers or ID documents in a chat with a bot you have not checked.
  • Be wary of anything that asks you to pay inside the chat through a link you cannot verify.
  • Check what happens to your messages: whether they are stored, for how long, and who can read them.

If you run a small business

A lot of people used ChatGPT on WhatsApp for business chores: a price list, a post for Instagram, a reply to a customer. If that was you, the useful question is not which chatbot to message next, but what you want finished.

SuperCat is one option, and it is not ChatGPT. You message it on WhatsApp, it learns how your business works, and it makes the real thing: a hosted website, an internal tool, an editable PowerPoint deck, an Excel sheet with working formulas, a video with voiceover and captions. You pay in cans for what it makes, $0.50 a can or an optional monthly plan whose cans never expire, and you can download your code and files any time. See what it makes, and how it works.
