What BYOK means for an AI assistant, and when it saves money

Bring your own key lets you pay AI providers directly instead of through a reseller. What you gain, what you take on, and how to decide.

BYOK stands for bring your own key. Instead of buying AI usage from the app you use, you create an API key with the model provider (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, ElevenLabs and others), give it to the app, and the provider bills you directly.

What you gain

  • A visible bill. You see exactly what each model call cost on the provider’s invoice.
  • Control. You choose the model for each job and can set a spending limit at the provider.
  • No markup on usage. The app charges for the service, and the model cost is whatever the provider charges.
  • Portability. The key is yours. Revoke it and the app stops using it.

What you take on

  • You need an account with each provider you use, and a payment method on file.
  • You watch your own usage. A busy week costs more, and a quiet one costs less.
  • Different jobs may need different keys: a chat model, a model that writes code or documents, a video model, text-to-speech.

Keep keys out of chat

Never paste an API key into a chat message. Chat history is stored, and a key in it is exposed. A good BYOK flow gives you a private page on your own device, stores the key encrypted and never shows it back. If you do paste a key by accident, create a new one and revoke the old one.

Is it cheaper?

It depends on how much you use. Light users often spend less paying the provider directly. Heavy users gain predictability and a choice of cheaper models for routine jobs. The honest test is to look at a month of usage and price it at the provider’s rates.

BYOK with SuperCat

SuperCat is a preconfigured AI companion for work on WhatsApp and Telegram. In early access you can bring your own keys for $2 a month: you enter keys for the chat model, the coding model, video, text-to-speech or anything else on a one-time private page, and the team switches your account over and confirms in the chat.
